French Dining

Like many other cultures, French culture is synonymous with French cuisine. If you’re lucky enough to be invited to dine in the home of un Français, it would be worth your while to arrive with an empty stomach. Make sure you also arrive on time (punctuality is paramount) and dress well. Nothing too fancy. Just simple and polished. Think Coco Chanel or Alain Delon.

French fashion has an effortless elegance to it. Stick with dark colors and add a couple of high quality accessories.

If you really want to impress your host, send flowers in the morning so they can be displayed during the meal. With the plethora of incredible French wines, if you decide to bring wine, bring the highest quality wine you can afford. The French know their wines.

Show that you’ve done your homework by greeting your host and other guests with a handshake or light “bisous” or kisses on the cheeks (once on the left and once on the right). Add a heartfelt “Bonjour” during the day or “Bonsoir” at night.

Now on to the bountiful feast! What is it about French food that makes it so decadent and irresistible? It’s a combination of fresh ingredients, careful finesse, and a bit of butter, of course. Rich dishes like boeuf bourguignon, bouillabaisse or crème brûlée instantly come to mind. They are the stuff dreams are made of.

After thoroughly enjoying the visually stunning and deliciously complex three-course meal, finish your after-dinner drink, or digestif, and give the host a warm, “Merci!”.  Your belly will be full and your face will be smiling.

Be a good guest and you just may have a permanent place at their table. The French understand what is important in life: good company and good food.
